KIDDOCJJ: What was the last thing you had to EAT that was memorable, and why?
SHIRLEY: I couldn't stop eating "Lubia polo" a Persian rice dish with dill, green beans, tomatoes and caramelized onions. The basmati rice was very aromatic and the "tadik" (burnt rice crust) was perfectly crunchy and addicting. In general, rice is one of my comfort foods and I enjoy how it is prepared in every continent! Short grain, long grain, whole grain, brown rice, red rice, sticky, I love it all!
KIDDOCJJ: What have you LEARNed that influences you daily or guides your decisions?
SHIRLEY: I've been brushing up on my Spanish grammar through audio books. I have a large following of Spanish-speakers and I learn new common names for plants in Spanish every day!.
KIDDOCJJ: What or where would you like to EXPLORE and why?
SHIRLEY: I would like to explore the micro world - micro organisms and the smallest forms of life. I need a microscope! I'd like to go on an archeological trip to ancient lands and visit a few rain forests. I'm fascinated by science, history, and culture. I don't want to leave this earth without understanding more than a few amazing facts about our world.
KIDDOCJJ: Who or what INSPIREs you and why?
SHIRLEY: Nature inspires me but so does genius human creativity! When I look out my window or am outdoors, my senses are in overdrive. I love to listen to the birds singing but have to close my eyes in order to distinguish the different calls. If I keep my eyes open and try to listen, I can only hear the cars passing by...weird.
I'm in awe of the synchronicity of life governed by the setting and rising sun. Photoperiodism is the physiological reaction of organisms to the length of day or night for all life forms. It's no wonder that so many important elements of life are tied to the sun- it is one of the few things we can count on every day.
I enjoy clever ideas. Practical solutions that are multifunctional are even better.
Kindness is King for me. I don't care how successful someone is, or how talented they are, I am most impressed by a kind heart.
KIDDOCJJ: Any last thoughts, Shirley?
SHIRLEY: I'm a happy wife, mom of 4; I love plants but I love people even more!
