KIDDOCJJ: What did you EAT last that is memorable?
DIANA: The most memorable thing I’ve ever eaten was the Mozzarella di Bufala tasting at Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles. It was the most delicious cheese I had ever had in my life. I remember walking into the restaurant and having this feeling of being in Italy, New York and California all at the same moment - places that speak to my heritage and where I’ve lived in my life. The freshness of mozzarella, the simplicity of ingredients with dishes that reimagine the ordinary. It’s a place that always reminds me of why I became chef. Nancy Silverton is an inspiration, and Osteria Mozza is my favorite place to eat.
KIDDOCJJ: What have you LEARNED that sticks with you daily?
DIANA: The lesson I have learned is to get comfortable with failure. I don’t think there is a chef out there that hasn’t failed at least once in their career. Everyone has failed at something. It’s how we learn and grow. If you take the lesson from it, failure is a gift. It transforms us and makes us better than we were before.
KIDDOCJJ: Where or what would you like to EXPLORE in your life, and why?
DIANA: One of my favorite past times when I lived in New York was throwing a backpack over my shoulder and taking off for the day. Not knowing where I was going, I would only start walking and see where I ended up. It was on these walks that I would be creatively inspired, no matter what I was working on at the time. While my dream is to do a culinary exploration of places like Italy, France and Spain, I try to walk and discover something new every week if I can.
KIDDOCJJ: Who or What INSPIRES you, and why?
DIANA: When I’m searching for a new idea, I love going through tear sheets from magazines to find inspiration. I’m a bit of a magazine junkie, always ripping a page here or there and stashing it away in my big binder of ideas. Everything from recipes to fashion to jewelry – anything that could inspire a new creation. I’m also inspired by other moms who are doing their best to manage their job, home and personal life, while being the best parent they can be. It’s inspiring to see women who are there with you. They help keep you going.
